Algorand entered the market backed by the academic prestige of founder Silvio Micali, a renowned cryptographer. The network delivered high performance, instant finality, and minimal fees, avoiding the outages that plagued competitors. Institutional interest was initially strong, highlighted by a partnership with the FIFA World Cup and various government pilot programs. These announcements generated considerable optimism regarding mainstream adoption. Yet, long-term usage did not materialize. Algorand is repositioning itself in niche markets, focusing on security and real-world assets after missing broader adoption. IOTA has undergone a significant technical overhaul, shifting from its original IoT focus to a more general-purpose Layer 1. Each project faces the challenge of rebuilding momentum in a competitive landscape where newer alternatives have captured developer and user attention. The gap between technical promise and market reality remains wide.
