Woofun AI reports that BlackRock maintains Bitcoin's status as a valid diversification asset despite a 50% drawdown from its recent highs. The asset manager contends that the price collapse stems from leverage unwinding rather than a deterioration in long-term fundamentals.
The market turmoil originated during the 2025 rally, where derivatives positioning became heavily stretched. By early October, Bitcoin futures open interest had surged past $90 billion. This excessive leverage triggered cascading liquidations when prices reversed, amplifying correlation with broader risk assets. Consequently, Bitcoin traded below $60,000 in June 2026 as investors reduced exposure amid softer demand from digital-asset treasury companies.
Institutional flows reflected this selective demand during the downturn. Per Woofun AI, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded $78.9 million in net outflows for the week ending Aug. 14. This mirrored broader trends, as U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively posted $389.7 million in weekly outflows, signaling forced deleveraging across the sector.
BlackRock's 2026 investment materials continue to advocate for 1% to 2% allocations to capture Bitcoin's low equity correlation. The firm highlights its decentralized structure, fixed supply, and global accessibility as distinct from traditional stocks and bonds. While liquidity shocks can temporarily align Bitcoin with equities, the long-term pattern remains divergent.
The scale of regulated investment products underscores Bitcoin's integration into traditional portfolios. IBIT, launched in January 2024, held $47.3 billion in net assets as of Aug. 12. This growth suggests that despite short-term volatility, institutional adoption continues to deepen.
