Woofun AI reports that Gnosis Chain has voted to abandon its standalone blockchain status in favor of direct Ethereum integration, a decision spearheaded by Co-Founder and CEO Martin Koeppelmann. The network is effectively dissolving its independent infrastructure to merge with the broader Ethereum ecosystem, marking a fundamental architectural departure from its previous operational model.
The immediate financial consequence involves the release of 350,000 GNO tokens, representing approximately 27% of the circulating supply, which are currently locked in staking. While these assets remain part of the circulating supply, their transition from staked to liquid status eliminates their role in securing the network. Per Woofun AI, the precise utility mechanism remains undefined, with potential models including fee sharing or GNO buybacks tied to network revenue, pending a separate governance proposal once rollup economics are clarified.
Structurally, the shift enables synchronous composability, allowing Gnosis contracts to interact with Ethereum contracts within the same atomic transaction and block, thereby eliminating the need for bridges. Gnosis Ltd. will operate the initial sequencer for transaction ordering, while proofs and settlement are moved to Ethereum, a move explicitly outlined in GIP-153 as a deliberate reduction in execution layer decentralization. This architecture permits mainnet wallet users to access Gnosis dapps in a single transaction, achieving seamless interoperability.
For GNO holders, this transition replaces established token utility with an unfinished revenue model while flooding liquid markets with a significant volume of previously staked tokens. The trade-off sacrifices decentralization for liquidity efficiency, creating immediate sell-side pressure against uncertain future yield mechanisms. This marks a decisive pivot away from independent network security toward integrated Ethereum scalability.
