Woofun AI reports that divergent capital allocation strategies have emerged among leading crypto custodians, with Strategy prioritizing liquidity accumulation while BitMine Immersion Technologies intensifies its Ethereum buy program during a broad market rally. The strategic split was highlighted by analysts Oluwapelumi Adejumo and Chopper for Foresight News, noting that Bitcoin and Ethereum prices surged significantly despite the contrasting corporate behaviors. This divergence underscores a fundamental shift in how institutional players are navigating the current market cycle, with one entity fortifying its balance sheet against volatility while the other leverages debt and equity to capture asset appreciation.
The broader market environment provided the catalyst for these moves, driven by falling yields on Treasury bonds, renewed optimism in the U.S. cryptocurrency market, and a wave of short-seller liquidations. Bitcoin rose by over 20%, approaching $80,000 at one point, while Ethereum gained around 30% on a weekly basis, posting its strongest weekly performance since May 2025. This upward trend attracted substantial new capital inflows, forcing the closure of billions of dollars worth of short positions, and both cryptocurrencies reached multi-month high levels. The sheer volume of forced liquidations suggests that the rally was not merely organic demand but also fueled by leverage unwinding, creating a volatile backdrop for corporate decision-making.
In response to this liquidity surge, Strategy executed its largest financing round to date between August 17 and August 23. The company raised approximately $2.01 billion by selling 18.26 million shares of MSTR common stock.
Notably, Strategy chose not to participate in this major Bitcoin rally by increasing its direct holdings. Instead, the capital was deployed to construct a massive cash buffer, marking a departure from its historical pattern of immediate reinvestment. This decision reflects a calculated shift toward financial resilience, prioritizing operational flexibility over aggressive asset accumulation during periods of high market euphoria.
Woofun AI data shows that Strategy's capital allocation was meticulously structured to optimize liquidity. Of the raised funds, $300 million was allocated to existing dollar reserve accounts, and $136.4 million was used to buy back STRC preferred stocks. The remaining majority was placed in newly established dollar cash accounts. As of August 23, the company's total dollar liquidity reached $6.69 billion, including $5.1 billion in dollar reserves and $1.59 billion in the new dollar cash pool. These two accounts serve distinct functions: the Dollar Reserve is primarily used to pay preferred stock dividends and debt interest, while the USD Cash Account can be used to buy Bitcoin, buy back MSTR common or preferred stocks, repay convertible bonds, and conduct other custodial activities. This bifurcation gives Strategy more operational flexibility than its headline cash balance would suggest.
Despite the favorable market conditions, Strategy's Bitcoin holdings remained static. The company currently holds 840,447 Bitcoin coins, with a total acquisition cost of around $63.36 billion. According to SaylorTracker, Bitcoin's price returned above Strategy's average holding cost of $75,385 during this rally. Yet, even in such favorable market conditions, it did not add a single Bitcoin to its holdings. This restraint indicates that the company is no longer operating under the simple model of 'issuing stocks to buy Bitcoin.' Instead, it is leveraging its equity issuance capabilities to build a war chest, potentially waiting for deeper market corrections or specific investment opportunities before deploying capital into the underlying asset.
Part of the raised funds was also utilized to buy back 1.431 million shares of STRC preferred stocks. Strategy's capital allocation strategy now includes significant buyback programs, with $516.6 million available for future buybacks of preferred stocks, along with $1 billion in approval for buying back MSTR common stocks. With billions of dollars in cash on hand, Strategy can wait for lower Bitcoin prices, discounts on its own securities, or other investment opportunities before deploying its funds. This approach transforms the company into a financial arbitrageur, capable of responding quickly to market disruptions, including severe fluctuations in Bitcoin's price or its own securities, as stated by the company.
In stark contrast, BitMine Immersion Technologies adopted an aggressive accumulation strategy. Facing the strongest weekly gain for Ethereum in over a year, it did not wait for a correction but continued to increase its holdings. This week, the company bought another 32,447 ETH coins. As of August 23, its total Ethereum holdings reached 5.85 million coins, accounting for about 4.8% of Ethereum's total circulating supply — very close to its publicly stated goal of holding 5% of all Ethereum. Since launching its Ethereum accumulation plan in June 2025, BitMine has continued to buy ETH every week, even as prices rose sharply. This consistent buying pressure demonstrates a high conviction in Ethereum's long-term value, regardless of short-term price volatility.
BitMine's strategy is further supported by its staking operations. The company has staked the vast majority of its Ethereum: approximately 5.07 million ETH coins (87% of its custodial holdings) are in staking, allowing it to earn both price appreciation gains and staking rewards. According to BitMine, on an annualized basis, the staking income is expected to reach $330 million. This revenue stream provides a critical offset to the costs of capital, unlike Bitcoin, which does not generate any intrinsic interest income. The ability to generate yield on its core asset allows BitMine to sustain its aggressive buying program without the same level of cash buffer required by Strategy.
CEO Tom Lee's market outlook reinforces this aggressive stance. He believes this rally marks the beginning of a major market trend, and one should not stop buying just because of short-term gains. Referring to history since 2021, he noted that Ethereum experienced two similar weekly surges, each followed by even larger gains in the following months. This week's 30% gain pushed Ethereum's price back above $2,400, a level that historically has been associated with further upside potential. Lee's perspective suggests that BitMine is positioning itself to capture the next leg of the bull market, leveraging historical patterns to justify its continued accumulation despite rising costs.
The comparative balance sheets of the two companies highlight the strategic conclusion. Strategy bears the heavy burden of preferred stock dividends and debt interest payments, requiring it to maintain large amounts of dollar cash. In contrast, BitMine has only $308 million in cash and marketable securities, with almost all of its balance sheet invested in Ethereum. After last week's market moves, the strategic differences became even more apparent: Strategy used the booming market to raise funds and accumulate cash as a buffer for future market turmoil, while BitMine capitalized on the same trends to move closer to its goal of holding 5% of Ethereum's total supply, essentially betting that this upward trend in Ethereum is far from over.
