The contraction in market leverage is starkly visible in on-chain metrics. Glassnode data indicates that open interest fell to 587,584 BTC, marking the lowest level in five months. This represents a significant drop from the 645,760 BTC recorded on Aug. 14, highlighting a retreat from derivative exposure despite the price surge.
The mechanics behind this price action involve forced liquidations and strategic exits by short sellers. Facing margin shortfalls, these bearish positions were either closed voluntarily or forcibly liquidated by exchanges. The resulting billions of dollars in short squeeze activity provided the upward momentum that propelled bitcoin above the $80,000 threshold.
