Woofun AI reports that Solana's mainnet has accelerated block production by lowering the target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, a move spearheaded by Anza CEO and SIMD author Brennan Watt. This initial phase of the sub-second speed initiative aims to tighten network timing while maintaining structural integrity.
The technical adjustment preserves the four-slot leader window and the 432,000 slots per epoch structure but compresses the nominal leader control period from 1.6 seconds to 1.4 seconds. By scaling down per-slot compute, account-write, vote, data, and shred limits, the network maintains approximate work capacity per second despite more frequent, smaller-budget blocks. The roadmap targets a final reduction to 200ms, contingent on stability at each stage.
Woofun AI data shows that epoch 1021 recorded only 331 skipped slots (0.077%), a significant improvement over the 1,890 skips (0.438%) in epoch 1015. Telemetry indicates an observed slot spacing of 365.4ms, supporting faster block-level feedback while finality remains a distinct metric. These figures suggest enhanced stability, though causality between the timing cut and reduced skips cannot be definitively established.
The subsequent 300ms stage remains pending as of Aug. 26, with reports indicating it is intended to take effect at epoch 1024, around Aug. 28. The protocol allows pauses if skipped-block rates climb, making this 350ms phase a critical live test for validator timing before the path to 200ms proceeds.
