Woofun AI reports that the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA) and City of London Police secured prison terms for two men linked to "Scattered Spider". Sentenced on Thursday at Woolwich Crown Court to five years and six months in prison, the pair had pleaded guilty during their first appearance on June 22. This judicial action targets a cybercrime syndicate responsible for high-profile extortion attacks across the UK and US.
The group’s operational footprint includes a massive breach of London’s public transport network in September 2024, which incurred 29 million British pounds ($38.9 million) in losses. On the US side, the Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed in September that the collective extracted $115 million in crypto ransom payments from at least 47 US companies. These figures underscore the transnational scale of the financial damage inflicted by the hackers.
Woofun AI data shows the group also breached Caesars Entertainment in September 2023, stealing customer data and forcing a $15 million ransom payment in Bitcoin (BTC). In response to these activities, the FBI seized approximately $36 million in cryptocurrency from linked wallets in July 2024. Investigators connected the syndicate to at least 120 computer network intrusions, demonstrating a pattern of repeated, large-scale digital theft.
Matthew Galeotti, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, emphasized the severity of these offenses. He noted that the attacks disrupted critical infrastructure and the federal court system, highlighting the growing threat posed by brazen cybercriminals. This sentencing marks a significant enforcement milestone against organized digital extortion.
