Woofun AI reports that Stripe is negotiating the acquisition of AI model routing service OpenRouter for an estimated $10 billion, a strategic move designed to embed stablecoin settlement layers directly into the operational workflow of AI Agents. This potential deal represents a significant pivot from traditional payment processing toward becoming the default infrastructure for machine-to-machine commerce, leveraging existing ties between the two entities to vertically integrate billing, risk management, and model access. The transaction, if finalized, would mark a decisive step in Stripe’s broader ambition to control the entire economic lifecycle of autonomous software agents, from initial model selection to final financial settlement.
The valuation surge underscores the intense market interest in AI infrastructure, with OpenRouter’s price tag jumping from its $1.3 billion post-funding valuation to the current $10 billion bid. This earlier valuation was established following a $113 million Series B financing round completed in May this year, which attracted backing from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and CapitalG, the venture arm of Alphabet, Google’s parent company. The dramatic increase in value reflects not just OpenRouter’s user growth but also the strategic premium placed on controlling the interface between developers and the fragmented landscape of large language models. Such a steep escalation in valuation highlights the competitive pressure among tech giants to secure foundational layers of the emerging AI economy.
Structurally, the acquisition builds upon pre-existing commercial dependencies between the two firms, creating a natural pathway for deeper integration. OpenRouter has long relied on Stripe’s suite of financial tools, including Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax, and Radar, to manage its global billing operations and mitigate fraud risks. By acquiring the router, Stripe effectively internalizes a key customer, transforming a third-party service relationship into a proprietary component of its own ecosystem. This vertical integration allows Stripe to streamline the flow of data and capital, ensuring that every interaction routed through OpenRouter can be seamlessly connected to its broader payment and compliance infrastructure. The move consolidates control over both the technical routing of AI requests and the financial settlement of those interactions.
A critical variable in this strategy is the foundational work Stripe has undertaken in stablecoin infrastructure over the past eighteen months. In February 2025, the company executed its largest acquisition to date, purchasing stablecoin infrastructure firm Bridge for $1.1 billion. This deal was specifically aimed at solving the friction points associated with stablecoin deposits and withdrawals, enabling smoother fiat-to-crypto onboarding for its users. By securing Bridge, Stripe gained the necessary plumbing to handle the high-volume, low-latency transactions required for machine economies. This acquisition served as the bedrock for subsequent initiatives, allowing Stripe to offer a seamless bridge between traditional banking systems and decentralized finance protocols.
Following the Bridge acquisition, Stripe further expanded its control over user identity and wallet infrastructure by acquiring Privy four months later. Privy, an embedded wallet provider serving over 75 million accounts, addressed critical gaps in identity verification and seamless user onboarding for Web3 applications. This integration ensures that users can interact with AI-driven services without managing complex private keys or navigating fragmented wallet experiences. By combining Bridge’s settlement capabilities with Privy’s identity layer, Stripe has constructed a comprehensive stack that handles everything from user authentication to fund custody. This dual acquisition strategy positions Stripe to offer a turnkey solution for developers building AI applications that require financial interactions.
The culmination of these infrastructure pieces was the launch of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) in September, developed jointly with OpenAI. This protocol introduced Instant Checkout within ChatGPT, utilizing a new payment primitive known as the Shared Payment Token. This innovation allows AI Agents to place orders on behalf of users without exposing their actual payment details, thereby solving the persistent challenge of how autonomous agents can initiate transactions securely. The ACP represents a significant shift in e-commerce architecture, moving from human-in-the-loop checkout flows to automated, agent-driven purchasing. By embedding this protocol into its ecosystem, Stripe ensures that the ordering phase of the AI agent lifecycle remains within its controlled environment.
To address the final leg of the transaction lifecycle, Stripe and Tempo, the payment blockchain incubated by Paradigm, launched their mainnet in March 2026, alongside the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). This protocol enables AI Agents to make small, frequent payments using USDC on the Tempo network, with built-in restrictions such as transaction limits and merchant whitelists. These safeguards eliminate the need for manual approval for each micro-transaction, solving the problem of how AI Agents should pay for services in real-time. The MPP provides the necessary trust and speed for high-frequency machine commerce, ensuring that payments are settled instantly and securely. This layer completes the triad of infrastructure needed for fully autonomous AI economic activity.
Per Woofun AI, the industry context for these moves is increasingly crowded, with major players forming alliances to standardize stablecoin usage. In June, Stripe joined the newly formed Open USD stablecoin alliance alongside more than 140 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, BlackRock, and Coinbase. Operated by independent company Open Standard and led by Zach Abrams, co-founder of Bridge, this alliance promotes an Open Standard for stablecoin interoperability. Simultaneously, Circle launched the Agent Stack in May, featuring Agent Wallets and Nanopayments for micro-transactions, while Google released the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
Additionally, the x402 protocol, led by Coinbase and deployed on chains such as Base and SOL, had processed over 190 million on-chain transactions as of July 23. This rapid proliferation of competing standards indicates a race to define the default payment language for AI agents.
Despite the strategic ambition, the market reality for AI agent payments remains nascent. OpenRouter, founded by Alex Atallah, the co-founder and former CTO of NFT trading platform OpenSea, acts as a model routing layer aggregating more than 60 providers and 300 models. It charges approximately 5% per invocation, helping developers compare options and automatically fallback to backup models if one fails. By March 2026, OpenRouter’s annual revenue reached $50 million, a significant increase from $19 million at the end of 2025, with over 1.5 million active developers.
However, a report by crypto trading firm Keyrock revealed that from May 2025 to April 2026, the total amount paid by AI Agents on-chain was only approximately $73 million. In contrast, the annual settlement volume for stablecoins reached $46 trillion, meaning AI Agent payments accounted for less than one ten-thousandth of that figure. This disparity suggests that current valuations are driven more by narrative and early positioning than by actual scale.
The deal faces significant headwinds and competitive pressures that could alter its trajectory. According to statistics from financial analysis site FourWeekMBA, the share of tokens from U.S.-based models on OpenRouter dropped from around 70% in June 2025 to about 30% in June 2026, with Chinese open source models like DeepSeek becoming the dominant force in usage volume.
This shift in model preference introduces geopolitical and regulatory complexities into the acquisition.
Furthermore, the Wall Street Journal reported that negotiations could still fall through, or other buyers might enter the fray. Stripe is also simultaneously competing with private equity firm Advent International for PayPal, a situation that ties up significant resources and capital. Regardless of the outcome, Stripe’s path over the past 18 months has been clear: it is no longer satisfied with acting merely as a checkout system in the AI era but aims to become the default infrastructure provider in the connection between AI and users. For the blockchain industry, the true significance lies in whether stablecoins can leverage the AI Agent economy to find the first large-scale inter-machine payment use case, thereby demonstrating the synergistic value of combining AI and blockchain.
