Woofun AI reports that AmericanFortress has introduced a cryptographic scheme designed to shield existing cryptocurrency wallets from future quantum threats without necessitating fund migration, key rotation, or address changes. Published on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, the proposal targets seed-based hierarchical deterministic wallets utilized across Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) networks reliant on elliptic curve cryptography, though the paper remains not peer-reviewed.
The technical mechanism diverges from traditional key replacement by employing zero-knowledge proofs derived from the original seed phrase rather than altering the underlying elliptic curve cryptography. Participating nodes are tasked with verifying these proofs, allowing users to continue signing transactions with their existing keys while maintaining post-quantum security layers.
Market urgency is underscored by a Bloomberg analysis estimating that up to $470 billion in Bitcoin could be vulnerable to quantum attacks if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge. In contrast to AmericanFortress’s software-centric model, Freedom Factory unveiled the PQ1 on Tuesday, a post-quantum hardware wallet for Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks that utilizes dedicated hardware to generate SPHINCS+C10 signatures and ERC-4337 smart accounts.
Per Woofun AI, the broader industry is mobilizing significant resources to counter the threat to elliptic-curve cryptography securing Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other blockchain networks. A Strategy-led consortium pledged $15 million for Bitcoin quantum security research, the Ethereum Foundation proposed migrating accounts to quantum-resistant cryptography, and Algorand outlined plans to introduce quantum-resistant accounts by 2027.
The divergence between software-based and hardware-based approaches highlights the fragmented nature of the race for quantum resilience. As post-quantum cryptographic signatures become critical, the industry must determine whether decentralized verification or dedicated hardware offers superior defense against future quantum attacks.
