Woofun AI reports that analyst Tom Lee has published a comprehensive ranking of 17 large-cap crypto stocks, evaluating their performance against Bitcoin and Ethereum using a 90-day rolling correlation metric. The assessment focused on companies with valuations exceeding $2 billion, benchmarking them against the performance of BlackRock's exchange-traded funds to determine market sensitivity. Data compiled by Fundstrat and FactSet highlighted a significant dispersion in how public entities linked to the sector are behaving, revealing a structural split between firms holding direct treasury reserves and those operating mining infrastructure.
At the top of the correlation hierarchy, Strategy recorded a 78% reading during the analyzed 90-day period, indicating a tight coupling with Bitcoin's price movements. In the Ethereum segment, BitMine Immersion Technologies demonstrated an even stronger link, reaching an 80% correlation, while the exchange Coinbase followed with a 74% correlation. These figures suggest that entities with direct exposure to digital asset balances or trading volumes remain highly sensitive to market fluctuations in @ethereum, $BMNR, $ETH, $COIN, and $MSTR, effectively acting as leveraged proxies for the underlying assets.
Conversely, Bitcoin mining companies ranked at the bottom of the assessment, showing minimal technical connection to Bitcoin's valuation. Core Scientific recorded a mere 16% tracking level, while Cipher Mining reached 17% and TeraWulf posted 18%. Hut 8 stood slightly higher at 19%, but still reflected a near-complete disconnection from crypto price action. Other firms in this segment displayed similar low-readings, with Riot Platforms reporting a 31% correlation against Bitcoin and IREN reaching 33%, underscoring a broader industry trend where operational models are diverging from pure crypto exposure.
Woofun AI data shows that the deeper driver of this divergence is the redirection of power capacity toward artificial intelligence data centers, as revealed by financial statement breakdowns. Core Scientific reported $164.2 million in revenue at the close of the second quarter, of which $136.7 million came from AI hosting and infrastructure services, compared to just $21.5 million derived from direct cryptocurrency mining. TeraWulf presented a similar breakdown in its May reports, generating $21 million by leasing high-performance computing (HPC) capacity and $13 million from block extraction, thereby allocating 62% of its revenue to the tech sector rather than crypto mining.
Notably, IREN recorded $33.6 million from cloud services and $111.2 million from mining during the quarter ending in March, confirming that the lower the share of revenue from artificial intelligence, the higher the observed correlation with Bitcoin's price. This business model transition has incurred significant capital expenditures, with companies like MARA and CleanSpark accumulating combined losses of $851 million during their respective infrastructure adaptation processes. In the equity market, high correlation did not automatically translate into positive returns, as Strategy shares traded near $118.86 at the close of the session, a stark contrast to their 52-week high of $365.21.
The industry will assess the full impact of this operational pivot during the upcoming quarterly corporate earnings season, when revenue figures for high-performance computing contracts will be updated. The shift from speculative crypto holdings to tangible AI infrastructure appears to be redefining the risk profile of these large-cap stocks. This marks a decisive move away from pure-play crypto beta toward diversified tech-sector revenue streams.
