Woofun AI reports that Bitcoin surged more than 20% last week, a move QCP Capital identifies as the asset's largest weekly gain since March 2024, triggered by shifting liquidity conditions in the U.S. Treasury market.
The price action was initially propelled by large-scale short covering, forcing traders who had bet against the asset to close positions. As the rally matured, momentum transitioned to spot demand, with investors rotating into risk assets. This structural shift in trading dynamics underscored a broad market reassessment of risk exposure.
Woofun AI data shows that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $2.6 billion in net inflows, marking the largest weekly inflow since October last year. This capital injection signals robust institutional interest and validates the asset's growing acceptance as a mainstream financial instrument.
The primary catalyst was the U.S. Treasury's announcement to double the size of its long-term Treasury buybacks. This debt-management strategy caused long-term Treasury yields to decline and the U.S. dollar to weaken. Consequently, alternative stores of value like Bitcoin and gold experienced significant price appreciation as liquidity conditions eased.
QCP Capital clarified that these operations are distinct from quantitative easing (QE), which involves the Federal Reserve purchasing securities to inject liquidity. Unlike QE, which carries broader implications for inflation and monetary policy, Treasury buybacks are narrowly focused on managing the debt maturity profile. This distinction is critical for understanding the specific nature of the liquidity shift.
Macroeconomic uncertainty persists as the interplay between Treasury operations, Federal Reserve policy, and global economic conditions creates a complex environment. Bitcoin's role as a barometer for liquidity remains central, with its volatility increasingly tied to traditional financial shifts.
