Woofun AI reports that Bitcoin breached the $80,000 threshold in Asian morning hours on Tuesday, driven by renewed speculation surrounding Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's initiative to expand bond buybacks. This price action extended a broader rally that had been catalyzed by the Treasury's strategic shift, marking a significant psychological milestone for the asset class despite emerging technical warnings.
The deeper driver of the current volatility lies in stretched positioning metrics. Bitfire Research highlighted a widely monitored momentum gauge, which measures recent gains against losses on a scale of zero to 100, currently sitting near 78 for Bitcoin. Readings above 70 are typically interpreted as signals that an asset has climbed too far too fast, suggesting an imminent pause. According to a note sent to CoinDesk, Bitfire identifies potential selling pressure in the $78,500 to $82,000 range, while buyers are expected to step in between $72,400 and $73,500. Bitcoin itself rose 4% on the day and over 25% on the week, reflecting the intensity of this short-term surge.
Notably, major altcoins exhibited divergent performance patterns alongside the flagship asset. Solana led the pack, surging almost 8% to just above $101, accumulating nearly 35% gains over seven days. Ether added over 2% to reach just under $2,500, posting a weekly increase of almost 32%. BNB rose over 2% to just under $714.
Meanwhile, XRP gained almost 2% to settle just above $1.50, emerging as the strongest performer among majors with a weekly gain exceeding 52%.
Woofun AI data shows that structurally, Solana's price action coincided with critical governance developments. Validators were voting on two proposals aimed at reducing SOL's supply, including one to slow new issuance and another to raise daily burns to as much as $800,000, with voting scheduled to close Thursday. In the broader market, Zcash extended its run, rising over 1% to $846 and achieving a 66% weekly gain, the strongest performance among the top dozen tokens. Dogecoin edged up to 9 cents for a 32% weekly gain, while Tron rose half a percent to just under 35 cents, remaining the only major without a double-digit weekly gain at 4%. Hyperliquid's HYPE was the sole decliner, dropping marginally to $81, though it retained a 36% weekly gain.
A more critical variable is the macroeconomic context fueling the 'debasement trade.' This narrative, which posits that assets outside government control protect against currency devaluation, was revived by Scott Bessent's plan to step up bond repurchases.
However, Bessent added nothing further on Monday, stating the department would continue its regular sales program and signaling no changes before the next quarterly refunding announcement in November. Morgan Stanley estimated the Treasury holds between $80 billion and $200 billion in spare cash for potential larger buybacks, according to interest-rate strategist Martin Tobias. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is set to speak at Jackson Hole on Wednesday, his first appearance there since taking the job. Central bankers gather at the Wyoming resort each August, and the chair's speech is historically where policy shifts are signaled before they arrive, leading traders to treat it as a rate event in itself. Lower rates make borrowing cheaper and push money toward riskier assets including crypto, while higher rates do the opposite by making government debt pay more for less risk.
Beyond immediate market movements, the upcoming calendar is dense with regulatory and economic catalysts. These include the procedural vote on the Clarity Act, the SEC's consultation on its crypto framework, the September Federal Reserve meeting, PCE inflation data, and payrolls. This convergence of policy signals and economic data points suggests that the current rally's sustainability will depend heavily on how these institutional frameworks evolve in the coming weeks.
