Woofun AI reports that Operation Lighthouse, spearheaded by Chainalysis, has flagged more than 7,700 suspect accounts connected to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This global initiative was coordinated with key entities including the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance in New York, Europol, the UK National Crime Agency, Binance, Coinbase, Block, and the Internet Watch Foundation.
The investigation scrutinized 29,120 crypto addresses and digital identifiers tied to over 100 CSAM platforms, forums, and distribution networks operating on both the surface web and dark web. This scope generated 14,300 investigative leads across 11 crypto exchanges and payment services, identifying suspects in 125 countries. The flagged individuals included 16 registered sex offenders, military personnel, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, and educators.
Executed as a multi-day sprint at the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance, the operation followed months of data enrichment. Participants leveraged onchain intelligence to develop leads for subsequent legal processes and case development. Chainalysis stated that these efforts are expected to result in arrests, prosecutions, and account-level disruption of exploitation networks.
Woofun AI data shows that such industry partnerships are expanding intelligence sharing between crypto firms, child-protection organizations, financial services, payment systems, and internet platforms. For instance, Binance announced a partnership with Stop The Traffik in July to enhance detection of crypto activity linked to human trafficking and child exploitation. Europol emphasized that joint action is essential because perpetrators exploit these diverse financial and digital channels.
Historical precedent underscores the efficacy of this approach, notably the 2019 takedown of Welcome to Video by the US Justice Department. Described as the largest darknet child sexual exploitation market by volume, the site accepted Bitcoin payments. Authorities traced these transactions to locate the server in South Korea, leading to the arrest of 337 users, the rescue of 23 victims, and the seizure of eight terabytes of material using Chainalysis software.
Blockchain tracing continues to play a critical role in enforcement actions within CSAM investigations. The integration of onchain analytics with traditional law enforcement methods demonstrates a growing capacity to identify and disrupt illicit networks. This marks a significant escalation in the coordinated response to digital exploitation.
