Woofun AI reports that Bitcoin's recent price action is being driven by the U.S. debt burden rather than crypto policy battles, according to BlackRock's Robbie Mitchnick. The asset is increasingly viewed as a tool to protect against fiscal pressures as the total federal debt exceeds $40 trillion.
Bitcoin is currently trading below $80,000, having previously recorded the largest three-day gain since 2023. This upward move occurred amid pressure on stock markets and increased volatility in bond markets. Mitchnick noted that the asset tends to recover when market confidence is weak, differing from traditional investments like stocks.
Stanley Druckenmiller and Ray Dalio have issued warnings about the U.S. fiscal path, citing high borrowing and persistent deficits. These experts argue that such fiscal risks could become persistent problems for global markets for years to come. Investors are increasingly concerned about the future purchasing power of fiat currencies, seeking alternative value stores.
Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that Treasury figures released on Wednesday indicated federal debt stood at $40.05 trillion on August 18, more than doubling since 2017. With spending exceeding revenue, the government borrows to cover deficits, causing net interest expenses to approach $1 trillion by 2025. This accounts for over 14% of total federal expenditures, adding significant strain.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the "big beautiful deal" approved by Trump's administration last year will add another $4.2 trillion to federal debt by fiscal year 2034. Tax cuts enacted over the past two decades have also affected fiscal revenues, contributing to the accumulation of debt. These political drivers continue to shape future projections for national borrowing.
Even as attention to the CLARITY act fades, Bitcoin continues to rise, having already gained broad regulatory acceptance. DeFi and other sectors may benefit more from clearer rules on Capitol Hill. Mitchnick noted that while clear regulation is seen as upside potential, it is not the foundation of the current baseline scenario.
