Woofun AI reports that a divergence between profitability and holding behavior has emerged among Bitcoin short-term holders, drawing scrutiny from on-chain analyst Axel Adler Jr. regarding imminent selling pressure.
The quantitative shift in holder sentiment is stark: the share of short-term holder supply in profit surged to 74.9% from 26.1% on Aug. 17.
Concurrently, exchange inflows reversed course, hitting 28,600 BTC on Aug. 24 after registering negative 18,700 BTC on Aug. 16. This rapid transition from accumulation to distribution marks a critical inflection point in market dynamics.
Structurally, these short-term holders are defined as entities possessing Bitcoin for less than 155 days. Their behavioral patterns are distinct from long-term investors, exhibiting a higher propensity to liquidate positions during price rallies. The recent spike in exchange deposits suggests a strategic move to lock in gains rather than hold for further appreciation.
Per Woofun AI, the risk profile hinges on two specific scenarios. If exchange inflows sustain above 25,000 BTC while profitable supply nears 90%, the market faces overheating risks and potential correction. Conversely, if profitable supply remains above 50% with inflows approaching zero, it indicates a healthy consolidation where holders accumulate. This contrast was evident in mid-August, when prices dipped sharply, pushing many into losses before the recent recovery.
The current data underscores a delicate balance in the Bitcoin market. While short-term holders have returned to profit, their increased exchange activity signals caution. Investors must monitor these metrics closely, as sustained inflows could trigger a consolidation phase, whereas tapering flows may support a sustainable rally.
