Woofun AI reports that Standard Chartered has secured first-mover status as the inaugural bank distributor for a regulated Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, partnering with Anchorpoint Financial. This strategic integration positions the London-based lender at the forefront of institutional digital asset adoption within the city's emerging regulatory framework.
Monitored by Woofun AI, the operational rollout involves STAN, which holds a majority stake in Anchorpoint Financial, initiating access to the HKDAP token on Monday. This launch follows Anchorpoint's limited release on Aug. 12, occurring four months after the firm obtained one of the city's first two issuer licences. The initial phase prioritizes institutional payments and settlement functions, establishing a foundational layer for broader commercial utility before expanding access channels.
Structurally, the bank plans to deploy new HKDAP commercial applications over the coming month, targeting specific high-value workflows. These use cases encompass market fund subscriptions, settlement with asset managers, and intragroup settlement across Standard Chartered's global network.
Additionally, the platform will facilitate cross-border payments, leveraging multiple access channels to enhance liquidity and transaction efficiency for eligible institutional clients and partners.
The competitive landscape remains dynamic, with HSBC preparing its own stablecoin for the second half of 2026, potentially distributing it via PayMe to its 3.3 million users. Simultaneously, Kraken parent Payward has intensified its Hong Kong presence through a $600 million agreement to acquire Reap Technologies. This marks a significant consolidation of capital and infrastructure in the region's digital payment sector.
