This transition is driven by the threat of Shor's algorithm breaking elliptic curve cryptography, a risk highlighted by a March 2026 Google Quantum AI document suggesting the cost of breaking 256-bit elliptic curve cryptography could drop by 20 times. The draft still requires integration with EIPs 7251, 7002, and 8282 to fully address validator-related changes.
Vitalik Buterin's broader roadmap targets four areas: validator BLS signatures, KZG commitments, ECDSA signatures for ordinary accounts, and zero-knowledge systems for rollups, with EIP-8141 considered for the Hegotá upgrade to enable native account abstraction.
