Woofun AI reports that Bitcoin futures open interest has contracted to a five-month low, a structural shift attributed to Glassnode data that signals a more sustainable rally architecture.
The metric now stands at 587,584 BTC, a sharp decline from the 645,760 BTC recorded on Aug. 14. This contraction occurred concurrently with Bitcoin's price appreciation from approximately $62,000 to $80,000 over recent weeks. The divergence between rising prices and falling open interest indicates that the upward momentum is not being fueled by an influx of new speculative capital.
Woofun AI data shows the rally is primarily driven by short liquidations rather than the accumulation of leveraged long positions. Consequently, bearish bets are being systematically reduced, which prevents the overcrowding of long positions that typically precedes sharp corrections. Annualized funding rates for perpetual futures have remained stable below 10%, a threshold that historically reflects a lack of market overheating and suggests traders are avoiding overextension.
A more critical variable is the growing share of cash-margined futures, which require traders to post actual capital instead of crypto collateral.
This shift toward conservative margin practices significantly reduces the risk of cascading liquidations during volatility spikes.
Structurally, this evolution reflects a maturing market that is less prone to the violent reversals associated with high-leverage environments.
While the current structure supports a sustained uptrend without the immediate threat of a leverage-driven crash, external risks remain. Regulatory news or macroeconomic shifts can quickly alter the landscape, preserving the market's inherent volatility. The combination of lower open interest and stable funding rates offers a cautiously optimistic outlook for Bitcoin's near-term trajectory.
